DESCRIPTION
Atlanta, GA has nearly 1,400 miles of sidewalks, many with barriers to equitable pedestrian access. In this episode of ADA Live, Shauncey Battle, ADA Coordinator for the City of Atlanta Department of Transportation, discusses the city’s recently updated ADA transition plan for the pedestrian public right-of-way. Shauncey explains what a regularly updated transition plan is and why they are important for cities like Atlanta. She describes the different types of barriers that the City of Atlanta found including missing curb ramps and policies and procedures that were barriers to compliance. She also describes how Atlanta is tracking its progress on compliance and how other cities can complete this work in-house on a very small budget. The goal of transportation and the ADA is to ensure that people with disabilities have equitable access to work, school, health care and to participate in the life of their community.

Atlanta Department of Transportation
Atlanta continues to emerge as an international city and global business powerhouse. To remain competitive and support anticipated growth, the city requires a transportation network that reduces automobile reliance and offers convenient, affordable, and safe travel alternatives. In 2018, the City of Atlanta introduced Atlanta’s first Transportation Plan, incorporating an accessibility strategy for the Atlanta City Design and fully integrating the city’s transportation investments with a vision for inclusive growth. Continuing this effort, the city formed the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) in 2019 to serve as the coordinating agency for all transportation matters within the city government. This department is designed to be a one-stop shop for citizens and external agencies. Built with dedicated staff from the Department of Public Works, City Planning and Renew Atlanta, ATLDOT will be fully equipped to plan, design, construct and maintain the mobility network outlined in the One Atlanta Strategic Transportation Plan.
